New Year, New Bit@h…Recipes to help you shed that weight!
Since the invention of butter, chips, dip, donuts, pasta, cake, pudding, and all that other gloriously yummy crap, humans have been struggling to stay trim and svelte. And every year around this time, millions of people resolve to take that weight off and eat better. So they go find the latest fad diet, deluded by promises of miracles and ease, stick to it for 5 wonderfully painful days and subsequently fail miserably. Well, this year IS different. Trust me, there really is only one key to losing weight and that is by committing to cutting down on the damn calories. Seriously. It is the only method proven time and time again to eliminate excess poundage.
Now, this doesn’t have to mean eating bland, tasteless, unsatisfying fare. There are so many ways to eat foods that are awesome and lower in calories. However, you really need to prepare yourself for this journey and take it day by day. It isn’t going to be a walk in the proverbial park, and if you are over 35, it’s gonna be (to use a word I am completely fond of) a total and utter bit@h…at first. In fact it takes most 35+ people an average of 3 months to shed 7-10 lbs. And to add insult to injury most of the progress will happen in the 3rd month. There will be no instant gratification here, so be prepared for that. Also, it will probably take two weeks for your body to even start to like and crave the new, healthy foods you are feeding it. Two excruciatingly painful weeks. But, I swear to you, if you can make it through the first 2 weeks, you will most likely reach your goal. In fact, after about three weeks, you are going to feel the best you ever have, and you will start to be repulsed by the old, fatty foods you used to binge on. You will also start to see the weight shed and feel extremely proud of yourself. There really is no better feeling so please, please, please hang in there. Now, I cant give you a magic pill, and there are no easy tricks. But what I can do, is give you some amazingly good, low calorie recipes to help you on your way. The rest is up to you.
Vegetables
Eat more vegetables! Seriously. This is the key. Eat as much fruit and vegetables as you like. But the trick is to keep from getting bored. Yes, it’s true, you should watch how you prepare the vegetables. Don’t use butter, but using a little fat like olive oil and chicken broth to braise and saute with can go a long way to tricking yourself into loving what you are shoving in that “former-pie hole”. Use a little wine in your cooking to add flavor without all of the calories as well. Here are recipes that will help you
Vegetarian Chili– I swear, you won’t believe it until you try it, but you won’t miss the meat in this recipe. Using a combination of lentils, barley and potato in this vegetarian dish actually fool your mouth into thinking there is meat texture in here. If that doesn’t work, you can also put a little ground turkey in this recipes, but keep it to less than a 1/4 lb. For added calorie cutting, use low fat cheese or light sour cream, or skip it all together.
Now, the trick here is to like these because they taste so damn good. Don’t expect these to taste like the real thing or to be a substitute for meat. If you go into saying, I am going to eat a delicious vegetarian meal tonight, you are going to fu@%ing love these. and because they are all vegetables, you can eat a sh!t ton of them.
Chicken & Veggie Meatballs– Now, these can be meat substitutes. I swear they taste almost exactly like the real thing. Again, the combination of barley, lentil and potato give this meatball a great meaty texture. But because you are also adding 1/3 chicken, you aren’t feeling the least bit shafted. You are gonna want to make a sh!tload of these and freeze them because you will be eating these every damn chance you get. To help cut the calories even further..serve them over rice, not pasta.
Potatoes-Seriously, you need to stop listening to those crazy Californians! Potatoes are good for you! They have a ton of vitamins and minerals, they fill you up, and they are low in calories! Just add a little flavor to them and bake and broil and you are good to go! These dishes make amazing sides and best of all, you can snack on them like you would potato chips!
